Fire Arts Inc. invites the public to an exhibit by ceramic artist Bruce Bishop. His exhibit of ceramic work will be open from February 15 – March 28, with an artist talk during the opening reception on Saturday, February 15 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Bruce’s unique style is influenced by his interest in indigenous native American culture and art from the American southwest and northwest. With a great appreciation, respect, and care for all living forms, whether it be plant or animal, many of Bruce’s pieces are created using a unique self-glazing slip called Gosu. This technique enables him to express his love of surface design on his animal and vessel shapes. By applying this special glaze to the stoneware piece when it is leather hard, negative spaces are then carved out revealing the color of the lighter clay beneath, resulting in the feel of a woodcut.
Bruce is a member of the Goshen Clay Artist’s Guild in Goshen, Indiana, and has exhibited his work in many regional shows and galleries, such as the Midwest Museum of American Art, Elkhart, Indiana; For the Love of Art, South Bend, Indiana; and the Higher Art Gallery, Traverse City, Michigan.
